Thomas

Band : Debauchery
Instrument/Position : Vocals

 An interview by DarkCruz

AM : First, can you introduce Debauchery to the readers who don't know anything about you (poor guys ;) ) ?

Thomas : DEBAUCHERY was founded bach in Germany three years ago and we play straight brutal and groovy Death Metal. We played since than a lot of single shows also as supports e.g. for OBITUARY, KATAKLYSM or FINNTOLL and toured through Europe with HATE PLOW (Malevolent Creation sideproject), NAPALM DEATH and now as our third longplayer “Torture Pit” was released we’re hit the road again with SIX FEET UNDER.

AM : As a two man band, how do you compose ? Will you use sessions musiciens to play live ?

Thomas : For the album we both compose the music with the guitar in single work. So some songs are from Dani, some from me. And one  is made by another musician. Jens.  He is not part of the band. The lyrics are always my part.  On stage we have session musicians but we hope to have a final line up confirmed shortly.

AM : At first, when I have seen the cover of your album I have though « oh no, not another Cannibal Corpse clone band ! ». Now, I can't stop listening to « Torture Pit ». You are more melodic and less demonstrative than a lots of death metal bands. Is it a choice or did it came naturally ?

Thomas : It came naturally. We make Death Metal music because we like it. We do not plan the songwriting. A good song is a good song.  It is as simple as that.

AM : I think that « Torture Pit » is like a journey around the world of metal on a death boat (since our guides through the whole album are death metal growls). Some songs sound like old school death metal, some like death/thrash stuff, some sound like nice old hard rock songs with death vocals, the two last songs of the album introduce slow black metal parts and the album ends with a melancholic piano melody. That's quite unusual for a death metal album !

Thomas : Yes, as said before. We do not plan the songwriting. A band like Judas Priest or Manowar has ballads, slow groovy songs, fast ones etc. We just doing the same in Death Metal. I do not want to play just fast songs with blast beat. So we bring everything we can. Fast songs, melancholic songs etc.

AM : Where come the idea to record your last record at Dennis Ward's House Of Music ? I think it was a nice idea because the sound is really good !

Thomas : We like good produced CD’s. So it was essential to record at a good studio. The House of Music has a good name. Primal Fear and Sinner for example have recorded their albums there. Dennis Ward was recommended by the studio. He’s a great producer. The best I have ever met.

AM : How did Tom Naumann from Sinner and Primal Fear ended up doing the guitars solos on Torture Pit ? He did a amazing work !

Thomas : I just called him and asked him if he would do it. I like his work with Primal Fear and Sinner a lot. He just said: “yes, no problem.” He’s a very very good guitarist. For all soli he just needed one evening. And he listened to the songs the first time in the studio right before playing the soli.

AM : Is it cool to be covered with blood ? You look both unhappy and angry about it in the booklet ;)

Thomas : Yes we like it. Blood and Gore. But after every show it’s fucked up to get yourself clean.

AM : As you have done a pussy version of Sabbat's Blood For The Blood God who only appeared on vynil distributed with a White Dwarf Magazine. Are you fan Sabbat or Games Workshop Games ?

Thomas : “Blood for the Blood God” is our own song. It was the opener from our latest album “Rage Of The Bloodbeast”. We just re-recorded it as a acoustic (pussy) version. The idea comes from Games Workshops Warhammer. It has nothing to do with SABBAT. But actually it is cool you brought the bame SABBAT, because we also shared the stage with “Return To The SABBAT” two years ago, when they were on the road!

AM : Our ritual last question : ask yourself ask yourself a question and answer it

Thomas : From where do you get the intestines for all the band photos?
From the Kindergarden.
